COMMUNCIATION
Communication surrounds us all constantly, and integrating technological literacy skills to appropriately digest this acquired information effectively is something I strive for with my future art students. I hope to help them understand that information is easy to access, but takes critical thinking to filter and decipher. This skill is vital since misinformation is easy to find and can easily mislead. It is imperative to have technology literary skills in all levels of education and in the professional world, and my goal in future art lessons is to have students research artists and current trends to help reinforce these skills and show that they are needed in all fields of study.
One of the affordances of the internet is the accessibility of information and convenience of communication, and there are vast amounts of reliable, current and helpful sites that make it easy to stay up-to-date with technology, art, and ideas. Two of my favorite design blogs include: THE DESIGN FILES and DESIGN*SPONGE. These both feature talented, ingenious artists that work in a variety of media. I often research featured artists further after learning about them from these sites. This kind of information gathering would have been laborious and nearly impossible prior to the internet. The internet has greatly enhanced the accessibility of art related ideas and artists, and I plan to take advantage of this plethora of information and pass it on to my students.
Communication is also one of the essences of art. It visually portrays what the artist is thinking about themselves or the world. It can also be used as identity or influence. Art is a powerful, influential way to communicate an idea. I plan to discuss this impact with my students, talking about the messages that artists are responsible for, including the positive and negative, and how they effect society.
